Universal Design for Everyday Living
Creating a Safer, More Comfortable Home
The Story
A Space that Flows with the Seasons of Life
When the Chambers family purchased their home three years ago, it was all about the views. But as they settled in, one feature of the house quickly became a challenge: the deep sunken living room.
The lowered floor, with stairs and an awkward walk-around, made everyday life difficult to navigate. “At one point I even tripped going down those stairs,” shared Mrs. Chambers. “I knew it would be a real problem once my mom moved in with us.”
Her mother was preparing to join their household, and safety became the top priority. Along with addressing the living room, the Chambers family also needed a reimagined kitchen, a new addition, and a design that would allow everyone to live comfortably under one roof.

Project Journey
Step 1: The Vision
The original space featured a large masonry fireplace, but the remodel required a change. The solution was a free-standing stove fireplace, which provides warmth and ambiance while opening up the floor plan for better functionality.
After interviewing several design-build firms, the Chambers family chose Golden Rule Builders. “I believe I made the right decision,” Mrs. Chambers said. From the start, the experience was collaborative:
Jeff, our sales consultant, helped the family navigate the possibilities with patience and guidance.
Cindy and Heather, our design team, worked side by side with Mrs. Chambers to select high-quality finishes and craft a kitchen that would be both beautiful and practical for gatherings with family and friends.
Tom, the lead carpenter and project manager, kept the project running smoothly. Mrs. Chambers described him as “excellent and trustworthy,” always quick to communicate and ensure work was done right.

Step 2: The Craftsmanship
Now that the project is complete, every member of the Chambers family has a favorite part of their new space. Her husband, the family chef, loves the open kitchen layout that makes cooking easier and more enjoyable. Mrs. Chambers appreciates the new garage and the ease of bringing in groceries without any steps to battle. Most importantly, her mom can now move through the home safely and comfortably thanks to the open floor plan.
Looking back, Mrs. Chambers says the crew’s respect for their home and property stood out, along with their craftsmanship and follow-through. “If there are any issues in the future, I believe Golden Rule Builders will stand by their work,” she said.
Today, the Chambers family’s home feels complete: safer for her mother, welcoming for family and friends, and better suited for the way they live.
