Joel built the first Golden Rule home in Fauquier County over 38 years ago. Over the years he has continued to build a reputation for quality, service, and community involvement. Joel has been named the Builder of the Year by the Northern Virginia Building Industry Association (NVBIA), Businessperson of the Year by the Fauquier County Chamber of Commerce and attained the “Big 50” Award from Remodeling Magazine.
Joel and his wife Patty have five children and are active members of the Dayspring Mennonite Church where Joel also serves as an Elder. He is also board chair for Fauquier Hospital, Laurel Ridge Community College, New Horizons Ministries, Good Life Ministries, Warrenton Business Group, and is a “Active Life Director” for NVBIA.
As a leader in the Green Building, Living-In-Place and Solar Energy movements, Joel has been involved in creating vision and responsible building practices in and around our community. His efforts include sustainable design models, healthy living alternatives, Universal Design concepts, and environmental stewardship initiatives — all of which help make for a stronger, cleaner, and safer community.
Hannah manages the financial side of the business. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Business & Accounting from George Mason University and a Virginia CPA license. An avid bicyclist and outdoor enthusiast, she resides in Fairfax County.
Greg joined the Golden Rule Team in October 2019 and brings over 35 years of construction experience to the table. He has a diversified background ranging from working in the construction trades to working with the nation’s largest homebuilder. He brings with him a unique perspective having worked in the millwork industry for several years as well. He currently resides in Frederick County with his wife Tracy, one daughter, four granddaughters and a menagerie of pets.
Sean: Over the course of my 26 years in the architecture and construction industry, I have come to appreciate the complexity of our vocation! The service we provide to the public by designing and building beautiful and safe environments is a bedrock of our country. However, our industry has lost some of it’s original focus in crafting holistic communities where all aspects of the environment work together to benefit the whole of society. Instead, we focus on the individual building, the statement we want our art to make, or maybe even just the easiest and quickest way to get the project done and move on to the next one. Architecture should be about crafting solutions to the built environment that solve not just our clients immediate needs, but provide another piece of the framework for healthy and sustainable communities. In a large sense, all of us should have this as our goal. By working together regardless of our individual professions, we can create a world that allows everyone to have success. I’d like to be part of that.
Jerry oversees your new home or remodel project, communicating each step of the project with you and keeping your project on schedule and on budget. He has more than 15 years of experience in the construction industry and resides in Fauquier County with his wife Mary Lu and 4 children.
Dennis joined the GRB team in 2000. With more than 20 years of experience in the home improvement industry, Dennis has a broad range of experience in both the design and construction phase of remodeling projects. He and his wife Carna have five children and are active members of Dayspring Mennonite Church.
Devin is our GR Lifestyles Manager and Architectural Designer. He enjoys Baseball, Basketball, and playing Guitar on his church’s Praise Team.

Jeff joined the GRB in 2022 and comes to us with 20 years of experience in the cabinet and home improvement business. While not at work, Jeff enjoys sports, traveling, the outdoors and spending time with family and has been a resident in Warrenton, VA for over 15 years.
Dave joined the GRB in 2016. He has over 30 years of experience in finish carpentry, trim carpentry and cabinet making. He formally owned and operated his own company. Dave previously lived in Mobile, Alabama, but moved to Stafford, Virginia to be closer to family.
David has been in the construction industry for 35 years. Framing for 5, trim carpentry for 20, and superintendent/supervisor for the last 10yrs. I’ve been married to my wife Janie for 16 years and have a 16 yr old daughter named Maryanne. We love camping, playing cards, and board games together.
I grew up in Falls Church, Virginia, in a large family. My childhood was filled with time outdoors and building things. I entered the construction industry in 2003 when I joined a small remodeling company in Arlington, Virginia, where my older brother was working. Just two years later, my brother and I decided to start our own company, which we ran for about 17 years. During that time, I worked my way up from journeyman to skilled carpenter, and eventually to Vice President of Production, managing all aspects of every project.
I’m excited to bring my ideas and 22 years of field experience to our clients. I currently live in Manassas with my wife and eight children. I enjoy woodworking, camping, hunting, and passing along my love of building to my kids.

Matt McCarthy is a Lead Carpenter at Golden Rule Builders and has been with the company since December 2020. Born in Washington, DC and raised in Dale City, Virginia, he has spent more than 32 years in construction. He started roofing at 18 and even launched his own business by 25 – proving early on that he isn’t afraid to work hard for what he wants.
One of his proudest accomplishments at GRB is the Richards Remodel, a project that showcased both his craftsmanship and creativity. His favorite tool is the wet saw because it allows him to shape and build just about anything he imagines. What he enjoys most about GRB is the stability and the chance to build something meaningful every day.
Outside the jobsite, Matt’s passion is brewing beer, and he’d make it his full-time gig if he ever traded in his tool belt. He loves fall weather, cheering on the home team, and singing along to whatever song plays next. His favorite foods include country fried steak or fish and chips, and his all-time favorite movie is Boondock Saints. He’s confident Woody Harrelson would play him perfectly in a movie and most of us agree.
Family is the heart of everything Matt does; they are his proudest accomplishment and his biggest inspiration. His bucket list is simple and honest: to see his kids grow up well. His advice for anyone entering construction is equally straightforward: don’t quit and never give up.
Matt brings skill, heart, and a steady dedication to the GRB team each day and if you’re lucky, he might even share a little of his latest brew.
Since August 14, 2023, Garry Mathis has been swinging his hammer as a Lead Carpenter at GRB — and if you ask him his favorite tool, he’ll tell you flat out: “Hammer. DEMO DAY!” Born in New Jersey, Garry got hooked on construction 13 years ago thanks to his uncle, and he hasn’t looked back.
Garry is known for being the loudest in the room (with the jokes to match). He’s a songwriter (JK), self-proclaimed comedian, and goes by nicknames like G-Rock or Garry the Great. His favorite food is steak, his favorite movie is Coming to America, and he swears Jack Black would play him in a movie. For a laugh, catch him singing I Feel Pretty.
Outside of work, Garry loves summer’s long days, cheering for Usain Bolt, and traveling (with Jamaica as a favorite stop). He shares life with Sarah & Bella (Sarah’s dog… though Bella clearly loves Garry more). His proudest accomplishment is his three daughters, and if he could offer one piece of advice, it’s this: “You are never too good to use a broom.”
Tom Hambleton: I grew up in Falls Church, Virginia in a large family. My childhood was full of being outdoors and building things. I got into the construction business in 2003 when I joined a small remodeling company in Arlington Virginia, where my older brother was working. Just two years later, my brother and I decided to start our own company which lasted about 17 years. While there I worked my way up from journeyman to skilled carpenter then Vice President of Production, I managed all aspects of every project. I am looking forward to bringing my ideas and 19 years of field experience to our clients. I currently live in Manassas with my wife and 7 children. I enjoy woodworking, camping, fishing, and passing along my joy of building to my children
John Mullins has been a Lead Carpenter with GRB since September 27, 2021, but construction has been in his life much longer — he started 21 years ago working alongside his father, who continues to inspire him today.
Born and raised in Goldvein, VA, John has a love for history, antiques, and the ocean. He dreams of one day visiting Egypt to see the pyramids, but when he’s closer to home you can usually find him collecting antiques or catching waves in his favorite season — summer.
A big fan of Forrest Gump and The Sopranos, John also has a taste for classic cars, with his dream ride being a 1965 Lincoln Continental. His proudest accomplishment outside of work? His children.
At GRB, John’s role isn’t just about carpentry — it’s about carrying forward a tradition of craftsmanship, curiosity, and family pride.

Nick joined Golden Rule Builders on January 11, 2021, and quickly proved himself to be a reliable, hardworking member of the Production Team. Working closely with mentors Matt McCarthy and John Mullins, he has grown steadily in both skill and confidence.
In 2024, Nick earned a well-deserved promotion to Skilled Carpenter II, following strong performances on the three big Projects. His work ethic, attention to detail, and willingness to learn have made him an invaluable part of the GRB family.
Though a little shy at first, Nick is known for being tall with a smile that can light up a room. He’s also built quite the reputation for his abilities both on the job site and on the skeet range. At just 25 years old, Nick’s career is only getting started, and GRB is proud to have him continuing to grow his craft with us.
With over 50 years in construction, Paul brings a lifetime of craftsmanship and character to the GRB team. Born in Illinois and raised “all over,” he’s proud to have worked on standout projects like Mark Warner’s Farm Poolhouse.
A musician and vocalist, Paul finds inspiration in Jesus, enjoys fall hunting season, and swears by coffee and venison backstrap done chicken-fried style. His advice for newcomers? “Tell the truth and listen to the veterans.”
When he’s not building or singing, Paul’s happiest working on his property, surrounded by his many cats and thinking about his two sons, his proudest accomplishment.
Jeff joined GRB in April 2024 as a Skilled Carpenter. With 45 years of experience in construction, he brings a wealth of knowledge and craftsmanship to every project. Born and raised in Virginia, Jeff enjoys carpentry most of all, following inspiration from his father. He is married and the proud father of his son, Mitch. Known as “Jefferson” among friends, he enjoys architectural drawing, riding motorcycles on the weekends, and cheering for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Mike Trettel comes to GRB from Minnesota. He studied carpentry at a vocational school and completed his apprenticeship through the Carpenter’s Union and later operated his own home repair business. He enjoys traveling with his wife Patricia, working and spending time with their grandchildren, and attending church.
Gregg joined GRB in October 2015 as a Journeyman. Born and raised in Madison, Virginia, he values the variety of projects and working for a company that honors God. Inspired by his father, Gregg is skilled with equipment like the Mini Ex and Tico Palm hailer, and he brings a strong work ethic to every job. Outside of work, he enjoys snow skiing, chicken alfredo, and cheering on Tim Tebow. Known as “3G” at work, Gregg describes spring as his favorite season and dreams one day of owning a Toyota Supra.
Cody joined GRB in August 2024 as an Apprentice. Born and raised in Virginia, he enjoys learning the trade and appreciates both the hands-on experience and the rewards of the work. When he’s not on the job, Cody spends time with his Australian Shepherd, Harley, and can usually be found with a cup of coffee in hand. He enjoys the fall season for its crisp weather and lighter jackets, and he believes the best advice for anyone new to construction is simple — start with comfortable shoes. Cody also has a passion for creative writing and shares a family connection at GRB through his last name.

Tracy Blair is the Purchasing and Client Care Specialist at Golden Rule Builders. With more than 20 years of experience in customer care, Tracy is passionate about making sure every client feels supported and cared for throughout their project. Her sharp eye for detail and calm, client-first approach help keep the building process smooth while ensuring purchasing needs are handled with efficiency and care.
When she’s not coordinating behind the scenes at GRB, you’ll find Tracy at home on her farm, spending time with her grandchildren and tending to her flock of chickens. Whether it’s family gatherings, caring for animals, or simply enjoying the quiet rhythms of country life, Tracy brings the same dedication and warmth to her personal life as she does to every client she serves.
Cindy joined the GRB Team in August of 2021 after owning her own business for 9 years. She brings 12 years of experience as a painter designer and photographer and studied Interior Design at Utah State University. She enjoys woodworking, hiking, biking and her favorite place to be is in the mountains with her husband Russ of 19 years and their 3 kids. Cindy works with customers to find materials that match their design style while staying within the project’s budget, making sure the design is functional and practical while maintaining functionality. “I’ve had a lifelong love of making things look beautiful and want to help you achieve the perfect home for you.”

Living in Virginia since 2020, Punam earned her bachelor’s degree in Architectural Design from India and has 5+ years of experience in Residential Architectural design in India and the USA. Customer satisfaction has always been my goal. Dancing and singing are her hobbies and was a professional Choreographer. Punam and her husband enjoy this area along with their 2 kids.
Susan is GRB’s Operations Coordinator and the unofficial Director of Fun. It was only fitting that her career took her to the Carolinas (she was born in Charleston, SC), where she spent 25 years sharpening her skills in project management, sales development, and business analysis. She started in construction in 1997 with Holder Construction, helping build one of the very first data centers in Ashburn, VA before transferring south to work on Wachovia Bank’s executive park and data center. She then joined the corporate offices of Lowe’s Home Improvement and Food Lion (two companies proudly founded in North Carolina).
Having spent more than half her life in Virginia and the Carolinas, Susan now calls Fauquier County home again, managing GRB’s schedules, permits, and warranties with her signature mix of accountability and energy. This “Gen-Xer” is a little bit bossy, a lot of fun, equal parts Excel nerd and free spirit. She’s also a portrait and sports photographer, an alumni of the Fauquier Falcons (Class of ’89), and a proud mom to her daughter Olivia and her dogs, Keira and Otis.
When she’s not color-coding a flowchart or building a Gantt chart, you’ll find her behind the camera or driving Hot Flash, her 2003 “Carolina Blue” VW Bug Convertible, singing along at full volume. Glitter is her favorite color, laughter is her favorite language, and she’s always dreaming of her next adventure (and more stamps in her passport).
